NGC 6888 – The Crescent Nebula
Cygnus
3h 20m Integration
No Filter
On 02 October 2025, I photographed NGC 6888 — the famous Crescent Nebula —
from Germany (exact location not disclosed).
Even as a no-filter one-shot color capture, the nebula shows its curved shock front and faint surrounding glow.
NGC 6888 is a wind-blown bubble in the constellation Cygnus, sculpted by the powerful stellar winds of a massive star
colliding with material it previously expelled. With enough integration and careful stretching, the delicate filaments begin to pop.
📡 About NGC 6888
Object
NGC 6888 (Crescent Nebula)
Type
Emission nebula / wind-blown bubble
Constellation
Cygnus
What to look for
Bright inner arc + faint outer hydrogen glow and fine filament structure
Why I love this target: It’s a “details over brightness” object — the reward is in the texture, subtle gradients,
and the crescent shock front that looks carved into the star field.
🔭 Imaging Setup
- Telescope: 200/1000 Newtonian
- Camera: ToupTek 183 (uncooled, one-shot color)
- Filter: None
- Capture Software: N.I.N.A.
- Location: Germany (exact location not disclosed)

Calibration Frames
- Lights: 40 × 300s
- Darks: 20
- Bias: 20
- Flats: 20
The calibration frames helped keep the background clean and made it easier to stretch the faint nebulosity without boosting unwanted patterns.
⚙️ Stacking & Processing
Stacking + Post-processing: Siril
- Calibrated the lights with darks, bias, and flats to remove sensor noise and optical artifacts.
- Registered/aligned all frames for accurate stacking.
- Stacked the dataset to improve signal-to-noise and reveal faint structure.
- Performed controlled stretching to bring out the crescent arc and surrounding glow.
- Refined contrast and color balance to keep the background natural while enhancing filaments.
🌌 Results
With 3h 20m total integration, the Crescent’s bright arc and subtle extended emission become visible even
in a no-filter color dataset. This target really benefits from careful stretching and gentle contrast work.
